The 59th Annual Holiday Bazaar @ MCA (_sucked)*

MCA's Holiday Bazaar this year was good for some and a bust for most. I sold one piece and used the moneys to get home for Thanksgiving. I put in a series of 4 works I did for the group show I was in back in September. I only changed one of them but it's not seen here... come to find out it almost sold three times during the two-days the works were up.

This one to the left started the series and I made it for a collage/mixed media class back in 2005.

I remember when I first made it how there was this eerie buzz going around like a chupacabra where too many people were using the teardrop motif to proffer their own stuff. I suppose one can't really avoid such virulent behavior in such claustrophobic situations as the college had and still offers it's student body.

The next three, of which only two are seen here, were playtime. I think they re-taught me the series, or at least how to look at making art objects as just that instead of dwelling on drawing out all the spaghetti strands of my inner self as incorporated elementals in everything I decide to do. Shit's overrated anyway.

All the while I'm still working on the Live From Memphis mural downtown ... progress pics soon. Me likey mucho.

I feel that's enough of all about that...i think. yes.

It's been a goddamn long while (March!) since I've touched this thing ... and now that I am I'll just point out that whatever ends up in here will be completely out of any reference to time ... i.e. here are some shots from what I've been doing this past week or so for Chris Reyes and the gang up at the Live From Memphis Studio in downtown Memphis. It's a commission AND a birthday present in one!! What's shown is merely the underpainting so no griping about color or the lack there of... it's a comin'!!
I'm hoping to get it further along before T-day, but color (right now) is beyond all frames of reference. But I did figure out one cool thing along the way, that ceiling paint absorbs water like paper.

I am making stuff again...

It feels like it's been half a year, since summer almost, that I have drawn (really drawn) anything for myself. My mind has been in a good place and I am grateful for it, but somehow I lost touch with that half of me that needs to create ... on paper.

Like a multivitamin, the simplest act of composing a space to my liking is both healthy and invigorating. And, whether I realized it or not, I have been missing its effects like a bad habit. Here are some of those effects in the making.

In this one, I went back into my assorted papers cache and found an old pre-sketched drawing (the deer trophy, bridge, "rivery" part to the left side of the page) and worked some newness into it, changing the orientation of the page to vertical. I can't be sure of where it's going, but me likey none the less.

Using your hands to speak the truth is brilliant. This one spells it out for me: "DRAWING STILL LIFE," plainly speaking.

It feels good to be back.

Old/New Works

These few have been around for a while, but internet access hasn't. So to briefly catch up, here are four small pieces of recent.

Reminiscing...

I went through some old sketchbooks looking for new inspiration of sorts and came across a few pages of interest. They proceed as follows:

Also, here are two shots of two works in progress. I've been watching a lot of the Planet Earth series and the whales get stuck swimming around in my head and I let them.
